Okay question for everyone...

Does it bother you when parents send there child to a deaf school and the child becomes fluent in ASL. The parent refuse to learn sign language for their child. I completely understand if you physical cant.

  1. Everyone can make their own choices, but I feel like they should make every effort to communicate with their child.

  2. Everyone has their own views in everything. Personally, as I've had to grow up with being hard of hearing and having to wear hearing aids, my parents didn't bother taking the time to help me one on one. I received help from counselors, a few teachers, vocal rehab, speech therapists. It was very tough on me as it became noticeable (my disability) when I was just two. So personally, it does bother me that a parent would send their child to a deaf school and the child becomes fluent in ASL, but the parent doesn't attempt to learn sign language for the benefit of their child. I understand that it can be confusing, but at least ATTEMPT. It would help your child thrive better than just not even trying.

  3. This is one of the biggest reasons I decided to pursue deaf education. Though I am not a parent yet, I would already do literally anything for my future children. For parents to not even take the time to learn their own child's language should be characterized legally as neglect and should not be tolerated. Why would a parent not even have the desire to communicate effectively with their child?? I understand my view on this is very strong, but this issue really hits me hard for some reason. It breaks my heart. As a future educator of the deaf, my goal is to be there for these children and do my best to fill the void that has been left by their parents. They need good adult influences that are there for them to talk to and to learn life skills from and I would love to be that adult for them!

  5. It frustrates me when parents are supporting and even encouraging their Deaf child to learn ASL but refuse to learn it themselves. Every family is different and I can appreciate that but I personally feel that communicating with your child should be a number one priority for any parent. I personally would always want my child to have the opportunity to have deep, critical thinking discussions with my husband and I. If being able to do this meant learning ASL then that is exactly what I would do. Especially if I am encouraging my child to learn ASL.
